Good Christmas Vibes (CD) 2014 (cc 5655) $10 + shipping
The music of Christmas holds a special place in my heart. I never tire of well-crafted, thoughtfully conceived renditions of Christmas songs and carols. The vibraphone is a wonderful instrument for lyrical music making, so what could be better than a collection of my favorite Christmas songs and carols arranged for solo vibraphone, marimba, and percussion. I hope you enjoy my percussive greeting card and know that I’m sending you lots of Good Christmas Vibes all year long.

The Iowa Steel Band’s fourth studio recording is an ambitious project that features music composed or made popular by world renown steel pan artist and composer Andy Narell, who not only performed with the band but also mixed the final recording.
The album received critical recognition. Percussive Notes, the journal of the Percussive Arts Society called it “one of the best steel pan albums produced in a while,” and went on to say, “The playing and production are superb, and serve as an excellent example of not only how to record steel pans but more importantly, how to play them.”

Nutville: Britain/Moore Duo (CD) 2014 (cc 5555) $10 + shipping
Some people say that the BMD lives in a fantasy world – the first two BMD CDs took their names from fictitious places like Cricket City or Little World of Rhythm. The title track of their latest CD, Horace Silver’s classic, Nutville, continues the tradition, but there is some debate as to whether it is a real or fictitious place. . . Drummer Johnny Rabb makes a guest appearance along with Brazilian percussionist Fernando Hashimoto.
Misfit Toys: Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? (CD) 2013 (innova 864) $10.00 + shipping
Featuring Dan Moore, Matt Wilson, Paul Elwood, and Robert Paredes. Having a circle of friends who will always say, “That sounds like fun—let’s do it,” is one of the greatest blessings a musician can have. It’s also pretty neat when those musicians are of the highest caliber.
When I came up with the idea of doing hybrid-jazz covers of pop music from the 1970s, the two people best suited for this musical adventure, my friends Paul and Matt, jumped into it with four feet and indefatigable creative energy. This was, after all, the music we grew up with. We’ve each charted very different musical courses, and the project reflects that, but this music has clearly influenced and informed our latter-day musical personalities.
Jungle Fever: Dan Moore Plays the Music of Dick Schory (CD) 1999 (Ovation/Cricket City cc 3940) $10.00 + shipping
“Credit producer Lowell Cross for his efforts to recapture the ‘Schory sound.’ Credit Dan Moore for successfully accomplishing the herculean tasks associated with a project of this nature, for his outstanding contributions as a performer throughout the disc, and most of all, for bringing this unique music back from the past.” —John R. Raush, Percussive Notes Magazine
Cabinet of Curiosities: The Graphic Percussion Scores of Robert Moran (CD) 2011 (Innova 792) $10 + shipping
This historically important compendium of Robert Moran’s graphic percussion scores from 1962 to 2010, plumbs the depths of this highly creative form of composition — from purely atmospheric sound explorations to in-depth studies of rhythm, melody, and harmony.
Created with the audiophile listener in mind, this recording is intimate and transparent, taking the listener on a very personal “elegant journey” through the interesting and beautiful world of graphic composition. “What makes these performances so successful is: the constant variety and careful choice of seductive sounds and just darn great playing all around. And there’s one truly magical work. Salagrama was composed in 1979 for the cathedral organ of Graz. Its original form was what the composer calls an ‘endless bass line’, tonal but non-directional. The result is truly seductive and hypnotic. At 25 minutes, it’s not a whit too long, and frankly, it’s one of the most beautiful ‘non-teleological’ (non-goal-directed) pieces I’ve ever heard.”
“So, bravo to all concerned. This is a tribute to the virtues of open form and notation, when directed to sensitive performers, who bring the whole of their skill and artistry to it.” —Robert Carl, Fanfare Magazine

Thomas L. Davis retired from The University of Iowa in 1996 after a 38-year career as professor of percussion. Through the years, he penned many compositions and arrangements for an array of instruments, a book for vibes that remains a standard teaching tool, and some of the most popular percussion ensemble music ever written. Dan Moore salutes the many contributions of Mr. Davis to the percussion field, and presents the essence of Thomas L. Davis.
The University of Iowa’s new Steel Band playing music that doesn’t sound like it came from the Midwest. Well, if calypso has made it to Iowa, it has truly made it everywhere. Mat Britain appears as a guest artist on this one.
